Enrique’s Unique Dives opened in July 2008 to meet the needs of experienced divers with opportunities for new, unequaled adventures.
Twenty-one years of swimming, diving, fishing and snorkeling the waters of Isla Mujeres makes Enrique Avila one of the most experienced divers on the island. A native of Isla Mujeres, he has explored every area near the island.
The fisherman in the statue in front of Jax’s is Enrique’s great grandfather, Christino Avila. He was a fisherman and trader who took the products of Isla Mujeres to other places in Yucatan and returned with food for the islanders. At this time, there were no gasoline engines but Avila sailed to other places with coconuts, carbon (charcoal), sea turtle meat, salt from the salt mines, fish and other products made on the island. His nickname was Tiger of the Sea and his family on the island is now known as the Tiger family.
Enrique has been diving since the age of nine and began his first job at age 14 and at 18 moved to Coral Dive Shop where he completed his PADI dive master certification and worked for twelve years. There he built a reputation as a first class dive master and guide with divers from around the world.
